Official Press Release:

Rising Star’s Senior Pastor earns his doctorate degree!

It is said that a life-long learner never stops the pursuit of growing personally and professionally. The passion of and commitment of the Rev. Amos L. Lewis can serve as the model for how persistence and prayer pay off. As a life-long learner, Lewis, senior pastor of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church on East 36th Street in Tucson, has earned a doctorate degree from Grand Canyon University in organizational leadership with an emphasis in Christian ministry. Grand Canyon is a private, nonprofit Christian university in Phoenix.

Friends of Rising Star and Rev. Lewis are invited to tune-in virtually on Wednesday, Oct 18 at 9 a.m. to view the Commencement and Hooding Ceremony on YouTube @GrandCanyonUniversity. We have provided the direct link as well. (1144) GCU Commencement 9am Ceremony | Oct. 18, 2023 - YouTube.

The Tucson community is invited to worship at Rising Star at its 10 a.m. service on Sunday, Oct. 22, where a congratulatory reception for Lewis will follow the service; the church is at 2800 E. 36th St. in Tucson.

Lewis has been Rising Star’s senior pastor for 36 years. Earning his doctorate is one of many lifelong milestones for the husband and father. After joining the United States Air Force immediately after high school, Lewis continued his studies, simultaneously earning an associate degree from St. Leo College, in 1987, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Liberty University, in 1992.

Pastor Lewis was licensed to preach in June 1983 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Pinckard, Alabama. Lewis retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant in 2001, after 21 years of honorable service, and became the full-time pastor of Rising Star.

Because of his passion for growth and service, he continued to pursue higher learning. He earned his master’s degree in theological studies from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in 2014. Lewis was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Saint Thomas Christian College in 2011.

Always questing for knowledge, Lewis enrolled in Grand Canyon University’s doctoral program. On Sept 20, the dean of the college approved and signed his dissertation, which is another milestone in Lewis’s 40-year pursuit of formal education.
