Bright Star Community Development Corporation

Bright Star Community Development Corporation has been providing services and resources since 2012 to improve the lives of the marginalized members of our Tucson community.
We are a community engagement nonprofit charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. Our organization is staffed by non-paid volunteers who manage its administrative and daily operations.

For when I was hunger you gave me food, thirsty you gave me drink, a stranger you welcomed me, naked you clothed me, sick you visited me, in prison you came to me….As you have done to these you have done to me (Matthew 25:40)

Many Children throughout Tucson rely on schools to provide breakfast and lunch, but have no reliable source for weekend meals. To address this issue Bright Star has partnered with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona with a partner of the BackPack program, a national program developed by Feeding America. Students under federal school breakfast & lunch programs are eligible to participate in the Back Pack Program. In 2015 Bright Star began working with 57 students in one Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) elementary school to address food insecurities. Bright Star currently supplies 284 students with nutritionally balanced meals in 5 TUSD schools every weekend.

Many of Tucson's most vulnerable residents experience food insecurities, as such lack access to enough food for an active and healthy lifestyle. Bright Star in addressing tis issues began our Food Pantry began operation in the Spring of 2017. The goal of our founder, Eileen Janice Hardware ,was to provide nutritionally balanced food boxes, produce, and meats for 25 families in the immediate neighboring community. We have met that goal, currently serving over 134 families representing 378 individuals . On a monthly basis we serve between 35 and 50 families and the elderly in the community meet their nutritional needs.

We are aware that a lack of nutritionally balanced meals has an adverse impact on our families. Chronic disease such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity have a negative impact on the health of the family and as such the health of our communities. Bright Star Food Pantry distributes over 2,400 pounds of fresh, fruit, meat, bread and other staples monthly. In addition to our monthly distribution we provide emergency food assistance to those in the Tucson community on an as need basis.
