ABOUT PASTOR LEWIS

A Word From Our Leader
"I would like to personally welcome you to Rising Star where the messages are biblically sound and practical. You will be encouraged by the people, challenged by the message, and blessed by the singing.  Come as you are.  We look forward to worshipping with you.  May God richly bless you!"

Pastor Amos L. Lewis is the son of the late John T. and Sarah Lewis of Pinckard, Alabama.  He graduated from Dale County High School and became the first African-American to win the prestigious John Philip Sousa Band Award.  After High School, he joined the United States Air Force where he continued his education earning both an Associates of Liberal Arts Degree from St. Leo College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Church Ministries from Liberty University.  After 21 years of honorable service Pastor Lewis retired as a Master Sergeant and became the fulltime Pastor of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Pastor Lewis was licensed to preach in June 1983 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Pinckard, Alabama.  While servicing in the Air Force, he stayed busy serving the Lord as an Associate Minister at the Glendale Baptist Church in Miami, Florida.  It was at this church that he met and married his lovely wife, Zeannie Lewis.  Pastor Lewis served as a Church Training Union Teacher for teenagers, a Royal Ambassadors Counselor for little boys, a Trumpet Player in the Music Department, and as a Bible Study Teacher at a local Correctional Facility.

After being reassigned to Davis-Monthan AFB in June 1984, Pastor Lewis joined First Southern Baptist Church and served as the bus captain and then joined Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and served as an Associate Minister.  Recognizing his heart for ministry, Pastor Ernest L. Girley ordained Pastor Lewis in September 1986.  Shortly thereafter, he was called to serve as Assistant Pastor of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church from January 1987 until he was officially called as Pastor in May 1987.  He was installed as Pastor of Rising Star by Pastor Girley in June 1987.

Through his anointed and innovative leadership, he continues to lead the church to new levels of ministry for kingdom building.  Rising Star is fast becoming a model church for ministry in the community.  He led the church from a membership of 50 people to over 800 members.  Due to the tremendous growth of the church, in July 2006 Pastor Lewis led Rising Star to start building a 2.5 million dollar, state-of-the-art multipurpose facility on their 4.3 acres campus.  Rising Star moved to their new campus and celebrated their Grand Opening, April 1, 2007.  Because of his passion for the Body of Christ and community, he also serves as the Moderator of the Southern Arizona Missionary Baptist District Association and is the former President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) of Tucson and Vicinity.

Because of his passion for growth and service, he continues to pursue higher learning.   Recently, he earned his Masters Degree in Leadership Development through Koinonia Christian College.  He also serves as an Instructor at Purpose Institute and Discipleship Center, which is an external degree program through Oral Roberts University.  Lastly, due to his leadership mantle he is currently mentoring over 25 ministers at Rising Star.

Pastor and Sister Lewis are the proud parents of four lovely children.  Two sons:  Kelvin (Tracy) and Jeremiah and two daughters:  Jenelle and Terria.  They are also proud of their grandsons, Jayden Lee Lewis and Emmanuel Z. Holmes.

Sister Zeannie Lewis is the First Lady of Rising Star.  She is the daughter of Sam and Bertha Middleton.  Sister Lewis grew up in Miami, Florida where she graduated from South Miami High School.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Liberty University and her Teaching Certification from the University of Arizona.   She has been teaching for over 14 years.  She has also earned her Masters Degree in Education at the University of Arizona.

ABOUT CHURCH HISTORY

The Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church was organized on December 1, 1976 with Reverend I. C. Green as founder and pastor.  The first service was held on December 5, 1976 with 43 charter members, including an associate minister, one deacon, and 20 choir members.

During the week of the first service, Reverend Milton Robinson discovered the building we currently occupy.  The church members decided to rent the building with the option to buy.  The first service was held in this building December 12, 1976.  At that service, three new members were added to the church membership.  In 1977, the decision was made to purchase the building.  After much negotiation, hard work, and prayer, the building was paid off in 1986.

In addition to Rev. I. C. Green,  the following men of God have pastored the church: Rev. Roosevelt Foley (1979-1984); Rev. A. J. Hall (1985-1986); Rev. James D. Shell (1986); and Rev. Amos L. Lewis (1987-Present). From June 1994 to September 1995, Rev. Ricardo Hatfield served as interim pastor during Pastor Lewis’ military assignment to Ankara, Turkey.

Over the past 31 years, the church has been marked by a growing membership and expanded ministries.  Currently, Rising Star has over 800 members and 40 ministries addressing the needs of the members and community.  Each year members from various denominations and from different walks of life are added to the Rising Star Church family. God uses them to make a great impact on the programs and services of the church through their leadership and participation.

In addition to serving the local community and organizations, the church has added ministries to reach out beyond the Tucson community.

These include: National Baptist Convention New Initiatives Program; Ankara Baptist

Church International, Ankara, Turkey; Christian Alliance for Children in Zambia, Africa, and the Humanitarian Aid Foundation World Relief Organization.

Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church is a proud member of the Southern Arizona Missionary Baptist District Association, Paradise State Convention, and the National Baptist Convention USA, Incorporated and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Tucson and Vicinity.

Recently, God blessed Rising Star to build a new 4.3 acres campus located at 2800 E. 36th Street.  A ground breaking service was held October 29, 2005.  We start building in July 2007.  The church was completed and passed all inspections in March 2007.  We had our Victory March on March 31, 2006 from our old building, 34 West 34th Street, to our new campus located at 2800 E. 36th Street.  Our first official service was held April 1, 2007, one week before Easter.  God blessed us with a tremendous turnout for our Grand Opening Service and for Easter.  We are so thankful that the Lord has blessed us to build a multi-million dollars state-of-the-art building and campus to worship Him and equip His people for ministry.

We are thankful for the visionary and kingdom-minded leadership of Pastor Lewis.  Following the Holy Spirit, the Lord continues to energize the church with new life and vitality.  Rising Star is fast becoming a model church for ministry in the community. Servant-leadership, sound teaching and preaching, warm fellowship, and genuine love make Rising Star the church it is today.

With God’s help, we will fulfill our destiny.  We thank God for the way He is leading us.  We are determined to let God build His church, His way, and for His glory.

ABOUT NEW CHURCH

WE ARE GROWING...
Warmer through Fellowship
Deeper through Discipleship
Stronger through Worship
Broader through Ministry
Larger through Evangelism
And Wealthier through Stewardship

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.   All the believers were together and had everything in common.  Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.    Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.  They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.  And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.  (Acts 2:42-47)
